Beta news & bits
I've not seen any official announcements, but evidently some people in forums were disappointed that the b eta will be on the 27th and not the 20th. I kind of expected that, given the concerns for available server capacity (and how well the beta forums are working currently. Currently the beta forum home page has this:
There was a horrible error! Try going back home?
...and the link takes you to the forum home page, which is where the error appears.
That aside, there's a set of beta videos from a chap that calls himself cynical (and he is somewhat...) He keeps calling the chars 'Cows', not helped that he gives them the biggest horns possible, making them look from behind like... um. .. cows. He's not a GW player, so it gives an interesting perspective (he likes his stabbie-stabbie)

Re: Beta news & bits
ya I figured it would be the last weekend in April, since they did keep saying at the end of April lol. Any how, gives me more time to make sure I have every bit of hw and studying done. If only I could escape work on weekends.... Bleh
Re: Beta news & bits
It'll be on the 27th, not the 20th. There's a management technique to this, if you want a quality product, and Guildwars is clearly intended to be Quality.
1) Announce to the staff on the 10th that you'll be holding the beta in Ten days (8 business days and change). The staff has that long, and no longer, to have everything perfect.
2) Everyone rushes to get everything done on time.
3) Invariably, one or more things will lag behind. Not always the fault of the team, sometimes there are external dependencies, and there's only so much you can threaten, cajole, or bribe a supplier who's late.
4) The evening of the 19th rolls around. Management announces 'Due to delays in completing some tasks, we are pushing the beta back to the 27th. This is all your fault, don't dare think of failing us again.' (not those words, the words are more supportive or everyone'd quit. But the mood must be maintained via back channels).
5) Everyone cringes some, knuckles under, and works harder.
6) The 26th rolls around, every task has been slotted into either 'Done', 'Fixed', or 'Patched' or 'Not Important Enough'.
7) The 27th rolls around, everyone, except a few unlucky server peeps goes out for a drink, pagers stapled to their belts just in case something doesn't work quite right over the weekend.
And not really related to the management style, but par for the course:
The 28th hasn't quite dawned yet, a pager goes off at 4:15 AM. Some hapless and hung over dev spends 10 minutes looking at a "Critically urgent problem" and decides 'Eh. It'll last the weekend without real problems.' If it's really noticible, he drafts a memo to support, who update content appropriately. It's not, so there is no memo to support, just a note: "Non critical. Filed for future resolution" forwarded to support, dev, and management.
9) Beta event concludes without additional drama.

Weekend of the 27th.
Looks like they let the dev team know 'failure' a day early.

Re: Beta news & bits
And now the hype train has officially begun to move again. Pretty excited about the beta coming, but did they seriously have to put it on the weekend right before finals for me?

Re: Beta news & bits
Bummer about your schedule.
Whether or not you get into the beta, do grab the download. Dollars to doughts, it'll update the game between beta versions and from beta to live, so nabbing it early will save on download times for when you do eventually get in.

I'll get to play Friday and maybe sat. Few hours Sunday as well.

Re: Beta news & bits
I would guess tomorrow or Wednesday, that way there is plenty of time to get the client to everyone.

Re: Beta news & bits
Found the DL page, but, from my device says: 'not available'. Either that means that they don't have gw clients for iPod yet, or it's just no available.
(I'd give the URL, but I've heard that accounts that logged in there prematurely were 'broken'... Probably fixed by now, but seriously, nothing to look at yet.)

Re: Beta news & bits
Saw the post on GW2G about the client, not going to risk it, especially with the university having a 6GB limit per day for downloading. As soon as I get that official email though, screw the limit I'll take an infraction on the last week of school just get it downloaded faster. I think the link will be emailed out within the next 4 or so hours (well I'm hoping at least).

Re: Beta news & bits
For anyone stuck on the 502 errors, I've pulled the following from the official GW2 download page:
http://cloudfront.guildwars2.com/client/Gw2.exe
Instructions are:
//Yamagawa
http://cloudfront.guildwars2.com/client/Gw2.exe
Instructions are:
- Download the Guild Wars 2 executable file.
- Create a file folder on your computer where you wish to install the game, and move the executable file there. This is where the game will save data whenever it updates. Note: If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, it is recommended that you install the game in a location other than the Program Files folder. Alternatively, you should run the game as an administrator.
- Run the executable file.
- Allow the game to patch the necessary data from our file servers.
- Enjoy!
